China Gold at Musée Maillol
June 18th - October 13th
China: so big and crazy it's hard to even think about it. Olympics, human rights and the sea change of the global job market are all hot topics in France but for the more aesthetically inclined, it's good to see China from the artist's perspective.
The Musée Maillol is currently running an exposition called "China Gold" which showcases 35 contemporary artists hailing from all parts of the big iron rice bowl. The exposition hopes to survey the nationalistic history of the country through the eyes of artists who have lived through many years of artistic oppression, and now, increasingly, artistic freedom.
China is scrambling desperately to find its identity, and to express that identity without fear of repercussion. The country's art has become a battleground between propaganda wielding autocrats and forward thinking social commentary, spilling over into the media and now a museum in Paris.
