November at Galerie Impaire
Galerie Impaire is at it again ! Known for bringing outsider art to the Paris scène, located in the epicenter of branchitude on rue de Lancry right by the Canal St.Martin, the gallery is opening another great show next week featuring new work from internationally celebrated artist and illustrator J. Otto Siebold.
Using spray paint, tape, stencils and pen on wood panel Seibold has created a body of work that reflects his sophisticated and insightful, yet cavalier perspective of everyday life.
While poking fun at his Mother’s real estate fetishism, Seibold came across “The Real Estate Book,” a free magazine consisting of pages filled with closely cropped horizontal photos of homes for sale, many listed with captions alluding to finding a ‘dream home.’
The imagery motivated the artist to create his own version of the dream home—portraying an idealized modernist style and often pulling from the street side elements of his Oakland, California surroundings.
Further below the surface, the work comments on the American dream that is embodied in owning a home of one’s own, and the resounding, collective loss of that dream as the housing market in the U.S. collapsed this year.
The masterfully painted ‘One Song Guitars’ seem to come from a place closer to the artist’s personal American dream—each guitar is painted with the lyrics of a song, and the chords required to play the song, alongside a narrative often depicting imagery pulled from the songs lyrics.
Seibold, (b.1960) is a self-taught artist, from Oakland, California, best known as the author and illustrator of many near-famous children’s books and potential classics, among them 1997's Olive the Other Reindeer, and more recently, Vunce Upon a Time.
During his time away from book illustration, Seibold is a widely exhibited artist having shown his work in galleries including: Grasshut, Portland, 2008, Paule Anglim Gallery, San Francisco 2004, Dietch Projects, New York, 2002 and a solo museum exhibition at Yerba Buena Center for the Arts, San Francisco, 2000.
