FNAC Festival Indétendances from Friday 23rd July
Free music! Outdoors! In the sun! By the Seine! Every Friday and Saturday from 5pm outside the Hotel de Ville the good, decent, hard-working millionaires who run FNAC have stumped up the cash to erect a stage and organise concerts for the good, decent, hard-working public who spend too much of their money at FNAC. It's running as part of the now world-famous Paris Plages Summer Festival, whereby the a section of the banks of the Seine is pedestrianized for four weeks, and temporary beaches are created from the Louvre to Pont de Sully, at the Port de la Gare and along the Bassin de la Villette.
The music kicks off on Friday 23rd with 'Belgian Johnny Halliday' Arno, who will be performing his hits such as 'Oh La La La', 'Putain!Putain!' and 'Jive To The Beat'. He'll be joined by beardy French alt-country group La Maison Tellier (any group named after a Guy de Maupassant short-story can't be all bad), psycho-billy fiddle-playing Feloche and Baz-Baz, purveyor of Lebanese-influenced pop.
Saturday 24th brings us sweet middle-aged folk from JP Nataf, Belgian indie-rockers Vismets, Arpad Flynn from St. Etienne and finally Paris' own Pamela Hute, wearing Buddy Holly glasses and making pop with synths and guitars.
The focus on Friday 30th is on hip-hop with Miami rapper Beat Assailant joined by Casey, ROCé and Nouvel R, all representing France.
Legendary New York rock outfit Nada Surf play on Saturday 31st, alongside intriguing dreamy-folk from Lonely Drifter Karen, the loud and rocky Lafayette and the fantastically titled Lily Wood and the Prick, who are a duo, obviously. Poor Lily.
Headliners on Friday 6th will be French girl-rock icons Plasticines, supported by seventies AM-rock fans Gush, Eiffel (not to be confused with Eiffel 65 who released that 'Blue-Da-Ba-Dee-Da-Ba-Da' song years ago) and indie-poppers Coming Soon, who will hopefully arrive.
There is a special night dedicated to the music of Brittany on Saturday 7th, with world renowned harpist Alain Stivell, Bagou Vraz, Plantec, Zebra, Baghad de Caraix and Merzhin.
Big names on Friday 13th are French vocalist and electro star Uffie and English trip-hop legend Tricky, who produced two of the best albums in each of the last two decades with 'Maxinquaye' and 'Blowback'. The throwaway Gallic pop of Boogers and electro-rap of 0800 will provide support.
Finally the whole shebang comes to an end on Saturday 14th with, what else, an enormous rave. Testing the speakers (and the patience of the gendarmerie) to the limit will be hotly tipped Clermont DJ Mr. Nô, Vitalic disciples Pulpalicious and mysterious Parisian duo Acid Washed, whose filtered disco tunes have been making waves in the US recently. Also making the dancey-dance on the night will be producer/DJ Danton Eeprom and minimalist DJ Chloe.
