On Coupe Le Son - Point Éphémére
The show is deceptively simple, appearing to be a hastily arranged collection of fan art. Reproductions are plastered on the walls, layered and chaotic. Taking two steps back reveals the genius at play; the room lies between the pages of an underground comic. Clusters of work become linked, fragments of a single performance, snapshots from the side of a stage. King Khan leaps from the wall courtesy of Luz's frenzied lines, Nine's renditions of Yo La Tengo draw you into an impossibly intimate concert, The Cavaliers are carelessly cool, tempered by Terrier's revealing portraiture.
All three artists are undeniably fans who experience the rush of a great performance. However, there's no evidence of idol worship, just the uncanny ability to infuse a two-dimensional character with the essence of sound. The Noisettes pop off the page while Daniel Johnston withers in tortured isolation. Terrier slips behind the scenes documenting the pervasive boredom bookending the half hour on stage. It's a complete picture, as encompassing as the room is immersive.
Give yourself a little time. The sketches give way to full comics worth a read and illustrate the stylistic differences between the participating artists. Also worth special attention is a collaborative project between Luz and photographer Stefmel who together deliver a kinetic experience akin to Ralph Bakshi's Cool World. Breeze past the sadly inadequate display of zines and press-badges before taking a beer out to the quai where you can dream up your next band or comic waiting for the evening's show to start.
