Cinéma au Clair de Lune

Clair_de_lune So it seems that the streets have emptied out during the month of August and you can't find anything to do? Everyone knows Parisians love their films en plein air and so why not see a film on an inflatable movie screen under the moon?

For the month of August the Forum des Images and the City Hall of Paris will be sponsoring this cinematic event that takes place in a different arrondissement every night.
Each film has a hint of Paris, for instance... Moulin Rouge and Marie Antoinette.

No reservations necessary but it's the same for all outdoor films, lay out your picnic blanket early.

La Pagode

Pagode1 A petite folie built in honour of the wife of the entrepreneur who opened Le Bon Marché. In the thirties the building was turned into a movie house that shows international films. It is one of the older cinemas in Paris with a lot of character and history.

Le Nouveau Latina

Nouveau_latina_paris_cinema Le Nouveau Latina (formerly Le Latina) has expanded it's programme of films slightly beyond just those from a 'Latin' perspective to include auteur cinema, midday thematic cycles, midnight screenings of cult favourites on Saturdays and films focusing on homosexuality.

There is a cosy tea salon and tiny store on the first floor, where you can buy obscure DVD's, posters and books. There's also photography & drawing exhibitions and tango classes available.

Forum des Images

Forum_2 Forum2 The Forum des Images is a veritable temple to the 7th art, with fantastic themed programmes, courses in cinema history and a library of nearly 7000 films relating to Paris.

You can buy a book of 10 tickets for 35 euros and you can use them during the programmed films or to access films in individual booths in the library.

Right now the Les Halles venue is undergoing work but that’s no reason to wait. Temporary venues are on the website.

La Cinémathèque Française

Cinemat The prestigious Cinémathèque Française is one of the best places to see classic film with superb retrospective and festival programming.  One time almost home of the (bankrupt) American Cultural Centre. They must have spent all the money on Frank Gehry.

Paris' Best Independent Cinemas

Pagode432 Leigh Fergus of The European has written a good piece about the best independent cinemas in Paris, something I've been trying to get around to in a while since I saw some cool links on my friend, filmmaker Elena Rossini's, site that links to Seances (le guide de la cinéphilie à Paris) and La Cinémathèque française.

Despite blockbuster DVDs and instant movie downloads, France is still a country of moviegoers, and Paris is still the film capital of Europe.
