Hotel Thérèse

Visuel8Text: Susie Hollands

Hotel Thérèse is situated in a fabulous quartier of Paris in a typical building from the 18th century looking onto one that is even more exquisite.  This 3 star hotel is a discreet bonne addresse of well-heeled lawyers, art historians and the fashion crowd. Originally the street was known as rue Hasard, because of the number of gambling dens, and the decadent ambience of pre-revolutionary times still lingers (isn't there a rather well known club echangiste on the same street?).  If you plan to visit the Louvre, attend a performance at the Comédie-Française or simply stroll in the haphazard streets between the avenue de l'opéra and the Palais-Royal, you will love the location.

The understated dècor suits the clientele; muted shades of green, grey and maroon in the wood panelled library encourage one to sink into a club chair and enjoy a drink from the "help-yourself" bar. The lounge area is inviting and has a great library of art books and Paris tomes. The 43 rooms are furnished soberly using dark wood and similar hues to the lounge with the odd zebra stripe for a little cha-cha-cha.

Le Petit Paris

(c)c-bielsa_hotel-lepetitparis_03Text Susie Hollands   Le Petit Paris is a welcome addition to the mid priced hotel options in one of the most sought after areas of the city. Still feeling brand new (opened September 2009) the old Relais de Poste is perfectly situated just 1 minute from the eastern gates of Luxembourg Gardens. It's equally suitable for a lover's weekend or  a family outing  perched at the slightly scruffier (but more fun) end of rue Saint-Jacques just past the Pantheon. Those seeking an authentic Latin Quarter experience will not be disappointed.  This is an unspoiled enclave, one of the cutest sections of the street next to an excellent Cave, cheese shop, bakery and with numerous bookshops for browsing.

Pershing Hall Hotel

P-pershinghall1 Text by Eva Krysiak

Pershing Hall Hotel provides a striking blend of sensory titillation. Dramatic green, red and pink lighting cloaks the walls and the smell of fresh mint and limes wafts from the cocktails. A vertical, botanical wall provides the centerpiece of the downstairs lounge - at 30 metres high and spanning two floors, it provides a dramatic setting.

Hotel Villa d'Estrees and Residence des Arts

Susie Hollands writing for VINGT Paris

Villa-estrees The glossy facades of Villa d'Estrees "boutique hotel" is a wrapper hiding a tacky and sub-standard offering, masquerading as a four star joint. Don't be fooled. The plush looking building and décor (rip off Jacques Garcia) will disappoint. Very well-positioned in the on a atmospheric side street rue Git-Le-Coeur near Place St-Michel a stone's throw from St Germain des Prés cannot save this disaster.

The hotel is found just off the heavily trafficked and (heavily kebbabed) rue Saint André des Arts. The ten rooms are reasonably spacious for the area with large, comfortable beds but the level of cleanliness is worse than can be imagined. Dusty bowls of old unwrapped cotton balls are left in the bathroom, white calcaire (caused by Paris' hard water) cover the expensive black marble sinks, and a generally very uncared for and unhygenic feeling remains throughout.

Hôtel Particulier Montmartre

Shakespeare_16 In a hyper-secret passageway in the heart of the Butte Montmartre our intrepid hotel sleuth was even flummoxed. She couldn't find it and thought it must have closed down. It's THAT Discreet.

This hotel (in a house that once belonged to the Hermés family) features five suites (4 junior (390 euros), one deluxe) and two large bedrooms by renowned contemporary artists; owner and manager Morgane Rousseau is a well-known curator.

In the rooms themselves we have wallpaper with plant illustrations produced from a photo by Martine Aballéa, an ingenious installation by Pierre Fichefeux which enables guests to record a message for the next guests, and a display of poems and hats by Olivier Saillard among other things.

Classic movies and art books are available to borrow from the library downstairs.

It's also possible to rent the whole hotel.  Now wouldn't that be fun.

Le Volets Bleus Chambres d'hôte - Biarritz Pays Basque

Shakespeare_17
Not in Paris but worth the trip to the South is Les Volets Bleus, situated about 4km from Biarritz in one of the most beautiful villages of the Pays Basque, Arcangues.

Like the British concept of Bed&Breakfast, but a million miles away in terms of style and panache are French chambres d'hotes.  You are effectively staying in a private home with a few guest bedrooms and often end up being treated like a member of the family.

Ex-Parfumeur, Marie de Lapasse created this exquisitely furnished property made all the more fascinating in that it is new but was constructed entirely from demolished Basque homes, so much so that is really does seem to be an "old soul" - old timber, flagstones and materials provide the ambience.  Great comfy beds and huge bathrooms with antique marble washstands and enormous baths help one settle in immediately.

L'Hôtel Des Académies Et Des Arts

Shakespeare_20 L'Hôtel Des Académies Et Des Arts is said to be a "Haven of artistic creation in Paris." It's design pays tribute to the life of the famous twentieth century artists who began their creations in the very neighborhood where the hotel is located.

You will notice the community of figure paintings and sculptures that inhabit the hotel, from the inside out. The figures were created by two French artists, Jérôme Mesnager and Sophie de Watrigant.

Le Georges V Four Seasons Hotel

Shakespeare_24 Le Georges V is a fabulous art déco landmark hotel dating from 1928, just off the Champs Elysées.  This meeting place for business or perhaps pleasure is the favoured spot of well-heeled Parisiennes.  This year the christmas décor is inspired by Dan Flavin's strip lights, an inventive break from the norm.  It's no surprise because the hotel's resident Fleuriste, Jeff Leatham (voted twice best florist in Europe) is a world leader in trends and has to stay one step ahead of the game.  Originally at the Four Seasons in Beverley Hills his fans include Ungaro and Cher.........

Hotel Lutetia

Shakespeare_25 On the Left Bank close to galleries, top fashion designers and the department store Le Bon Marche. The Lutetia accommodated numerous painters and writers (Picasso, Matisse, André Gide…) as well as the not so nice Nazi high command in WWII. The 1910 Art Deco gem is still in great shape.

Le Bellechasse

Shakespeare_26 The fashion designer, Christian Lacroix, was thinking like a chef when it came to creating the up-graded Bellechasse, located in the 7th arr. He has mixed ingredients from old, new, and future interior design concepts in order to whip up a luxurious hôtel cuisine . Its character is meant to reflect the charming area it is set in, with classic architecture and modern art. It's worth stopping by to check out the eclectic drawings for the Bellechasse designs and get a taste of the unique visionary concepts of Lacroix.
