VINGT EVENT The Arts Arena Presents Daniel Buren 5 PLACES LEFT!

Flickr-2322373628-imageThe Arts Arena presents a French conceptual artist Daniel Buren, creator of the Palais Royal’s "Buren’s Columns" and advocate for the maintenance of public art works. Daniel Buren was born in 1938 in Boulogne-Billancourt, Hauts-de-Seine. In 1986 he created a 3,000 m² sculpture in the great courtyard of the Palais Royal, in Paris: "Les Deux Plateaux", more commonly referred to as the "Colonnes de Buren. This provoked an intense debate over the integration of contemporary art and historic buildings. Sometimes classified as an abstract minimalist he is known best for using regular, contrasting maxi stripes to integrate the visual surface and architectural space, notably historical, landmark architecture.

This event will take place on Tuesday, February 23, at 7pm and will be followed by a cocktail reception.

For reservations email news(@)vingtparis.com.

Reservations are limited to 25 and we hold reserved seats until 7:05pm then allow other people to sit in them. Anyone who is late can come in, but won't have a blocked seat after 7:05pm

Fitzcarraldo at La Villette

Sunday, August 16, 2009

Fitzcarraldo_pl1 Join VINGT paris on a warm summer's evening this August for the finale of this year's 'Cinéma en plein air' (free outdoor cinema).

From 15 July till 16 August, 27 films will be projected on a giant screen in the grass triangle, at Parc de la Villette, Paris' largest park located in the 19th arrondissement.

This summer the films include numerous adventure classics such as Pirates of the Caribbean, Into the Wild and Forbidden Planet. Films are shown in their original versions with French subtitles.

We've chosen the 1982 film Fitzcarraldo, written and directed by Werner Herzog, starring Klaus Kinski as the title character - derived from a real-life story of Peruvian rubber baron Carlos Fitzcarrald. The film portrays the baron, an Irishman called Fitzcarraldo in Peru, who has to pull a steamship over a steep hill in order to access a rich rubber territory.

Snapshots from Robert Storr's lecture at the inaugural Yale Arts Arena Lecture last night

Richter-cage Thanks to everyone who attended the lecture last night at the American University of Paris. Our Vingt meet-up drew a good group of people eager to hear Robert Storr and they weren't disappointed.

Storr, who is arguably one of the seminal art critics, curators and thinkers of the past 50 years, spoke about John Cage's influence over the great American painters of the 20th century.

In a time when many (though not all) artists were struggling with the transition from modernism to post-modernism, Storr points out Cage's ability to let go of formal structures and explore other methods of expression.

He draws connections to Gerhard Richter, Philip Guston and Ellsworth Kelley, where Cage is a clear influence as seen in the play of random color blocking and chance process.

I V Y Paris Presents Artist Ariane Dionyssopoulos' Poupée Parisiens

March 18th, TOMORROW NIGHT!

Hiver 2009 343 I V Y paris invites you to discover Parisian artist, Ariane Dionyssopoulos.

Having worked in theatre as an actrice, Ariane was inspired to take part in her own mise en scène, recreating people and scenarios from everyday life.

Each poupée is handmade of FIMO clay in a technique that Ariane has developed entirely on her own. Not your average porcelain figurines, the dolls have true personality and wear distinct facial features that vaguely remind you of someone you know or seen before. What makes them even more striking is their sharp sense of style, mixing bold colors with various prints.

Photo: A couple of young ladies stand by a café wearing animal print waistcoasts paired with grey slacks, vintage brooch and ankle boots.
